Purchase of Alaska political cartoon
The topic of this political cartoon is William Seward, the Secretary of State during Abraham Lincoln's terms, buying more countries. Seward was a believer in expansion so he arranged for the purchase of Alaska from Russia. The cartoonist's message is that Seaward was too greedy with buying countries. The cartoonist depicted Seward as a fat, glutton who is constantly eating. On the other hand, some peoples opinion maybe that Seward was a great help to the economy. By purchasing Alaska, Seward gave America raw materials and furs. The cartoonist used symbolism by showing Seward eating territories. They also used exaggeration by increasing Seward's head and size. The cartoonist supports my opinion on anti-imperialism. I am against imperialism due to problems that occur when a country keeps territory in an other country.
